The Rise Of DJ Kool Herc
DJ Kool Herc has become a well-known name in the world of Rap. Born Cliven Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, Herc emigrated to New York City where he rose to become one of the more popular rappers of his time. He released his first album ‘LP’ in the late seventies and then again in the eighties. He went into a lengthy recording contract with the Cash-Perk group that resulted in hit singles like “Relax” and “Who’s The Man”. In addition to this he also signed to several other popular groups including the Sugarhill Gang, Akon, and the World Gangsta Boys.
DJ Kool Herc has become known throughout the world and is seen at parties all over the world. One of his favorite subjects is Jamaica and he is well known for his reggae beats. He was born in Kingston but was raised in the Bronx and outer boroughs of Brooklyn, USA. He gained a large following with his reggae music and was frequently seen in documentaries and music videos from the seventies onwards. He is well-known as a jockey on New York City’s subway system known as the King of the Cross.
As a DJ, he performs a mixture of reggae, hip-hop and new-style music all in familiar surroundings. He enjoys performing with his band and creates a fun atmosphere in which the listeners can easily lose themselves in. He enjoys playing music from several different styles including reggae, jazz, hip-hop and new-age, which he says is a genre all of its own. According to him, he enjoys using words such as “yeah”, “you know”, “don’t you think so?” and “oh yeah”.
