Mob Wars: The True Story of DJ Freezer
DJ Freeze, also known as Dave Spade and billed as DJ Twister on the sound track of the movie Chicago, is a character in the late Michael Grant novel, The Hard Way. A native of Englewood, Colorado, he is described as a hoodlums who roamed the streets in the late twenties, early thirties, and beyond. The book describes him as intelligent, streetwise, and well organized with a talent for music who often got himself into legal trouble along the way. He was tried as a murder victim in the movie, and although the murder was eventually ruled out, he served thirty-five years in prison for the crime. It was this crime which led to the real identity of DJ Freeze being uncovered by detectives posing as a new murder victim in the first place.
In order to solve the mystery of DJ Freeze’s whereabouts and identity, detectives detective Raymond Rowe and his partner, investigator Ellen Tracy set out on a wild goose chase looking for the elusive DJ, never to find him. Tracking him down, they come across a warehouse where they find a number of human skulls, including one that is frozen. At this point, they learn that they will have to dig deeper than the police and private investigators if they are to uncover the true identity of DJ freeze.
At this point in the book, they come across information that links the death to a mafia war going on at the time. This leads them to an old warehouse where there were bodies piled up in a pile of rotting meat, bones, and plastic bags. The next day, they speak with a man who says that he is acquainted with DJ, but that he does not know where he is or why anyone would hire a murderer for a gig. At this point in the story, Rowe and Tracy realize that they need the help of a private investigator to help them figure out who the killer is, since without one, the case becomes a much more personal one. Raymond Rowe ends up leaving the warehouse with the skull of the dead woman, which prompts another call to the private investigators. Finally, the investigation concludes with a message left by DJ, which directs them to the address provided by the mafia boss.
