DJ Magic Mike is among the key hardest working, most popular, and best sounding drummers in the industry today. Born to be a beat maker, his productions have swept the radio airwaves for over a decade. He has honed his skills with many producers since forming a crew called the “MAP” with producers Big Daddy Kane and Eazy-E. However, what separates him from many other producers is his own individuality and skill to make records that keep listeners on their feet.
D.J. Magic Mike is probably one of the few modern producers who have consistently made top ten albums and continues to do so. His reputation as an “imperative,” a “gypsy,” a “street samurai,” and a “no nonsense” MC has kept him where he is right now. He’s the quintessential male MC, making top ten records with such mainstream giants as Reebok and Scottiezzy.
If you’re familiar with Mike’s music, you’ll know he is an MC that relies on his lyricism more than his beats. His flow is smooth, crisp, and flows easily from one song to the next. His songs are often about issues that are important to him, or things that are reflective of his life. He makes songs that have an edge, but also maintain a melody. For instance, his “Xxplosive” sample is dark, menacing, yet positive and fun.
What makes D.J.? so unique is his ability to play off of a simple microphone or kit. Sometimes his music is made using a computer-generated program, although the majority of his beats are created using a traditional drum machine. As he says, he can “do almost anything with a beat.”
In addition to his chart-topping hits like “Xxplosive” and” Blueprint” Magic has created some solid underground hip-hop records as well. Some notable ones are “Is not No Way” with Wale, “Alisha” with T-Wayne, “Baggy” with Slim Jazzy and DJ Premier, and “Know” with K Dot. However, it wasn’t until his “Tha Gotti” that his true musical genius was revealed. This album was supposed to be his final statement of inspiration and was supposed to be his farewell song. Instead, he surprised everyone and had everyone talking.
Will we ever see another album like “Wake Up” or” Blueprint”? It’s possible, but who knows? The one thing for certain is that DJ Magic Mike continues to impress with his original sound, innovative lyrics, and immaculate production. He may never be the next crossover star, but if he keeps releasing great records like “Is not No Way” and ” Blueprint 2″, he will continue to add to the legend that is DJ Magic Mike. While this may end up being his last album, it’s worth a try!
